What Is Deriheru? Delivery Health Meaning in Japan

Deriheru (デリヘル) is short for “delivery health”: an outcall adult sexual service in Japan. “Outcall” means the worker travels to the customer, rather than the customer visiting a service venue. It does not mean healthcare. If you have seen “deriheru,” “delivery health” and “Japanese escort” used together, the key is to separate the Japanese term from the broader English label.

Here is what the word means, how to recognize its Japanese spelling, and how it differs from other terms in Japan’s adult-entertainment industry. Sources checked: 23 September 2026.

What does deriheru mean?

Japanese: デリヘル
Reading: de-ri-he-ru
Full expression: デリバリーヘルス (deribarī herusu)
English wording used in Japan: delivery health

The Imidas dictionary identifies デリヘル as an abbreviation of デリバリーヘルス, referring to an adult service involving dispatch to a location such as a hotel. The English words are used as a Japanese industry expression. “Health” here should not be understood as a medical qualification or a description of healthcare.

Deriheru, deliheru or deriharu: why the spellings differ

For the Japanese word デリヘル, use deriheru as the reading. “Deliheru” and “deriharu” also appear in English-language searches, but they do not by themselves identify different service categories. To check which term an English page means, look for its Japanese spelling and definition.

“Japanese escort” is broader and less precise: an English label alone does not tell you which Japanese business category is being described. Likewise, “Tokyo delivery health” adds a place name; it is not a separate legal category. These labels should not be treated as promises about a particular service, person or business.

Delivery health vs fashion health, soapland and hostess clubs

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police category list separates the following formats. These are basic distinctions between types of business, not a list of permitted acts.

Delivery health / デリバリーヘルス

An outcall format: a worker is dispatched rather than the customer attending a service venue.

Shop-based fashion health / 店舗型ファッションヘルス

A premises-based adult-service category, distinct from the outcall format.

Soapland / ソープランド

A separate category connected to private rooms in bathing facilities. It is not another name for delivery health.

Hostess clubs and similar entertainment venues

Businesses involving entertainment and food or drink fall under a different category from the adult-service categories above.

A love hotel is accommodation. A hotel room and an adult-service business are separate things. Finding these words on the same page does not make them interchangeable.

Is delivery health legal in Japan?

Japan has a regulated business category for this format. Kanagawa Police lists delivery health as category 1 of non-store-based sex-related businesses, under its notification-based business categories. That does not establish that every business using the name complies with the rules, or that every activity is permitted.

Business notification and the legality of a particular act are separate questions. A simple “legal/illegal” tick chart or the word “licensed” in advertising cannot settle both. For the detailed legal distinctions and primary sources, use the related guide below.

Quick answers about deriheru

Are delivery health and deriheru the same term?
Yes. デリヘル is the shortened Japanese form of デリバリーヘルス, commonly written “delivery health” in English.

Is it a medical or ordinary wellness service?
No. In this context it refers to adult sexual services. The word “health” is not evidence of medical care, testing or freedom from infection.

Does the word explain what every business offers?
No. It identifies a format, not a standardized list of activities, a price, language support or a guarantee of admission.

Is every “Japanese escort” page describing deriheru?
You cannot tell from that English phrase alone. Check which Japanese term and business format the page actually describes.
